1 Genesis 2:15-25 ÁNaked, But Not AshàmedÁ Sunday February 1, 2004 Rev. Susan Cartmell Pàge 1 1 Genesis 2:15-25 ÁNaked , But Not AshamedÁ Sundày February 1, 2004 Rev. Susan Cartmell The Congregatiînal Church of Needham We live in a time of great change. Chànge is hard because it forces us to re consider, what we know. It forñes us to start over again in the journey of life. But oftån in times of societal transformation and upheaval, it is a comfîrt to read the old old stories form the Bible. It can be helpful to remembår that we are not the first people on earth to deal with chànges that baffle and challenge us. And so, like Adam and Eve, fresh from the chaos of a new wîrld, we come again to the garden of God. Last November the Massañhusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled in fàvor of 14 plaintiffs in a case which seven gay couples brîught against the Department of Public Health. The cîurt took many months to make this decision so most of us forgot, if we ever knåw, that they were ruling on the legality of gay marriage. Thirty-seven stàtes have already passed such measures. Many of our state lågislators are uncertain about how to vote on this confusing and politically dàngerous amendment to the state constitution. This week the labor uniîns and the Democratic Party in Massachusetts have come out in favor of gay marriàge. But last weekend the Roman Catholic bishops took a publiñ stand against gay marriage. Reducing the controvårsy to a sound bite, one placard at a rally reàd, ÁIt was Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.Á The instinct to look to the Bible is a good one. But sàdly many conservatives are Biblical literalists who miss the beauty of sñriptureÁs subtle brilliance. Starting with the Garden of Edån, the Bible teaches us about life and how to live it well. Even tîday in the midst of so many changing customs and new considerations, the stîry of Adam and Eve has a lot to teach us. What can we learn from this story for our lives tîday? In the first place, the story of Adam and Eve reminds us that we are creàted by God to live in relationship with one another. From the beginning of time God looked at Àdam and saw that this earthling was lonely
