E very Tuesday from 11á11:45 a.m., approximately 20 faculty and staff sit silently in a circlå Á eyes closed, breathing deliberate, hands fîlded gently and consciousness focused inward away from the frenetiñ pace of the campus. In a soft, melodic voice Stephànie Nuria Sabato, associate professor, gràphic design, guides the group through meditàtion techniques. ÁPeople tell me they leave class fåeling more refreshed, more focused, more calm,Á Sabato sàid. For Sabato, meditation is more than a weekly class Á it is a way of lifå. She rises before sunrise, then pràys and meditates more than two hours. At night she practices meditatiîn another 30 minutes. ÁMeditation is like breathing for me. I cànÁt live without it,Á Sabato said. ÁI pràctice all day. Walking down through the buildings, I have a mantra on my bråath.Á Raised in the Catholic church, Sabato still has a strong connection to Catholicism. But as a young adult, she got involved locally in Sufism, Buddhism and Hinduism. A personal crisis shifted her world viåw, and she began to feel that organized religion was very externàl, while meditation was an internal process Á a meàns to gathering the shattered pieces of her life. In 1988, she attended her first meditation camp Á three weeês in the Swiss Alps. In 1990, she made her first trip to India, visiting Rishikesh at the headwaters of the Gangås River, one of the holiest cities of India. She also spånt time with Mother Teresa, working in an orphanage and ñrippled childrenÁs home in Calcutta. ÁWhen we prayed in the evening, Mother Teresa would fall into a small heap on the stonå floor of the small chapel. She was both the humá blåst and most powerful being in the world.Á On the same trip she met the Dalai Lama at his hîme in Dharamshala, India. In 1993, she began studying with a Tibetan Buddhist teacher Khamtrul Rinpoñhe, a close adviser of the Dalai Lama, who is also the formår Minister of Culture and Religion of the Tibetan governmånt in exile in Dharamshala. She returns to the mountain villagå almost every year to receive teachings Pàge 3 and developmental spiritual practices. Altogether, Sabatî has studied and practiced meditation for more than 20 years in Indià, the Middle East, Europe and throughout the Unitåd States at various religious monasteries and mådá itation centers. She began teaching meditatiîn in 1990 in the United States, Europe and India. This summer she taught in Holland. She also holds a måditation retreat once a month at her home. ÁMore sciåntists are realizing what mystics have known for years Á meditàtion has emotional and physical benefits,Á Sabato sàid
